Trees and Forest Assignment

Create a poster board using real materials from the trees or forest.

Include a minimum of 3-5 leaves and 3-5 bark rubbings on your poster board. It is preferred that the bark rubbings are from the same trees as your leaves. This way you can confirm that the leaves and bark belong to the same tree.


Describe each leaf by answering the following:

What is the leaf pattern?

What is the leaf arrangement?

What is the leaf shape?

Describe the leaf margin: Describe other characteristics of the leaf (veins, color, other observations):

Which tree is the leaf from?


Describe the pattern from each bark rubbing and identify the tree it is from.



Bark Rubbings

1. Find examples of four different kinds of bark.
2. Make rubbings of each one.
3. Cut a sample of the bark rubbing (5cm X 5cm)
4. Label the bark pattern and the tree.

One way to laminate your leaves if desired:
Put a leaf between wax paper. Place a towel on top of the top piece of wax paper. Place a dry hot iron on top of the towel. The wax paper will form a “crude lamination” for the leaves.
